PHILOSOPHY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Does Prof Robson’s philosophy of photography apply ONLY to cell phone (iPhoneography) photography? No, you are able to use any camera you know how to work to take a great picture.
  • What are the four areas of Prof Robson’s philosophy of photography? The four areas are Composition, seeing light, being present, and the camera.
  • According to Prof Robson, what is the main goal of every serious photographer? Serious photographers must be attentive, have good habits, know how to use their subject, light, and composition. Also you must look at the story of the image to lure you viewer and use the rule of thirds to focus on how you want your image to be portrayed.
  • What are some of the decisions a photographer makes with EVERY image EVERY time? By using the rule of thirds and understand composition to lure the viewer to your vision.
  • How much have you ever paid attention to the light? It’s direction? It’s color? I sometimes pay attentions to light and color when wanting to take a beautiful picture. I rarely pay attention to direction when trying to take a picture.
  • What does the word photography literally mean? (This is not the dictionary definition of what photography is–it is the literal “translation” of what the word actually means. You will have to do a bit of research…) Photography was created from the Greek roots photos, genitive of phōs, light and graphé, together meaning "drawing with light" or "representation by means of lines"
  • Why is it so important to be present (or mindful) to produce a quality image? It will distort what you are trying to communicate, will split your attention from what you are trying to do, and will make learning the art and fun of photography far slower and much harder.
  • How much of your attention is usually split between multiple places? What are the advantages and disadvantages of that? I usually don't split my attention between multiples places because I am focused. Some advantages of having your attention split into multiple places is that you are aware of your surroundings and the type of pictures you can take with your surroundings and light. Some disadvantages to this is that you are able to loose focus quickly.
  • How much of producing a quality image is in the control of the photographer? How much is solely under the control of the camera? A good photographer is able to take a picture on any camera since they have mastered techniques and skills. However, a good camera is useful if you know how to use it properly but the photographer creates the vision.
  • Why do most people (who don’t know any better) think that the camera totally controls an outstanding image? Most people believe this because the camera is able to depict a beautiful image even though the photographer is taking these photographs.
  • How has your viewpoint and understanding of this article changed your understanding of photography? This article has taught me many things but the one that stuck out to me the most is that the vision of the photographer and the practice of skills and technique creates a beautiful photograph.
